Hyundai Santa Fe vs Toyota Highlander

Hyundai Santa Fe vs. Toyota Highlander: Which Midsize SUV Offers More for the Money?

Whether you're shuttling the kids around town or commuting to work, you want the experience to be comfortable, safe, and enjoyable. The new Hyundai Santa Fe earns high marks for its smooth ride, welcoming interior, and wealth of gratifying tech features. The new Toyota Highlander is also a roomy three-row SUV, but it falls short of the Santa Fe in a few key areas. At Crenshaw Hyundai in Burlington, NC, we want you to be completely pleased with your SUV. We created the following comparison to help you make an informed decision.

Technology

Infotainment System

Modern drivers want to play music, get directions, and connect with their smartphone apps while they're out running errands. The new Hyundai Santa Fe comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. The next trim up offers a Panoramic Curved Display integrating the infotainment screen with the digital gauge cluster. Greensboro drivers will like the system's sharp graphics and quick responses to inputs. Higher trims add a 12-speaker Bose audio system and a head-up display.

The new Toyota Highlander's standard infotainment touchscreen is just eight inches long. You must move up to the Limited trim to get a 12.3-inch display.

Safety

Your family's safety is priceless, and the Hyundai Santa Fe has a history of earning Top Safety Pick+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The new Santa Fe upholds that legacy by providing a suite of nine standard safety features. Included is a rear passenger safe-exit system that can prevent a rear passenger from opening a door into traffic approaching from behind in Mebane.

The new Toyota Highlander only comes with four standard driver assistance features. A rear passenger safe-exit system is not on the list.

Performance

Engine Power

You need an SUV with plenty of get-up-and-go, so you can easily merge onto highways around Graham, NC. The new Hyundai Santa Fe features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 277 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. Its eight-speed automatic transmission provides smooth, prompt shifts for effortless acceleration when you need it.

The new Toyota Highlander's standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine only produces 265 horsepower, so it doesn't offer as much oomph as the Santa Fe's stronger powertrain.

Highway Fuel Economy

Three-row SUVs aren't typically known for earning high gas mileage, but the new Hyundai Santa Fe fares well for its size. Front-wheel drive models achieve up to 29 MPG on the highway.

The new Toyota Highlander is slightly less efficient than the Santa Fe, returning up to 28 MPG highway.

Interior

Hyundai is committed to creating inviting interiors with an upscale vibe, and the Santa Fe exemplifies that philosophy. Its sleek, modern dashboard has conveniently placed controls, including a twist-to-drive column shifter that opens up the center console area for storage or the available wireless smartphone charging pad. Cloth seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard, but Hillsborough, NC drivers will like the genuine Nappa leather upholstery in Calligraphy trims.

The new Toyota Highlander also has a nice cabin, but it's not quite as modern or refined as the Santa Fe. You must pay more for a higher trim if you want a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
